There have been two exciting phenomena within the gaming world over the past few years.
One is the idea of “battle royal” games, which have 100 people playing each other simultaneously. Fortnite is one of the best know games pushing that style of gaming to the world. The concept is simple; out of 100 people playing, only one team of four can win. Fortnite made an addictive game and made the game accessible by giving it to players for free and charging them for physical characteristic upgrades. Despite this – the game still requires a fair amount of skill. And to be good, you need to play the game on a console or PC. You can’t compete if you’re playing on a phone.
The other idea which recently came into vogue, albeit for an insanely brief time, was HQ Trivia. The game pulled people together at one point in the night and had them all compete for a cash prize. Millions of people would play against each other. After each question in the trivia game, hundreds of thousands of people would be eliminated until there were only a few left to win a cash prize. The game eventually failed. Partially because the payout often split between so many people that it wasn’t very much and, from what little I know, the team running the company was a bit immature and couldn’t handle the success.
My idea is to combine these two genres. Imagine a game which…
Started every night at 9ET, 6PT.Was a shooter of sorts, but only 2D and easily playable by phone. I imagining something similar to “TowerFall”.Put you with a group of 100 people. If you win, you get an in-game prize. If you lose, you stay the same. Moved the top 5 people in each game up a tier and the bottom 5 down. That would ensure all the best players start playing each other, and the worse ones play each other. This structure is similar to the English Premier Soccer League, for those who are interested.
This game style would be a great way to feel a common bond with nearly anyone who played it. I think this could be important now, where we are all so separated from one another. It would have defined winners and losers – but it would be accessible by literally everyone with a cell phone.
I think it would be interesting.
