Work = Force x Distance
This common known equation in physics should be applied to the workplace more often.
The amount of work completed has nothing to do with the amount of time spent applying force. A person putting in 12 hour days in the office does not necessarily do more positive work for their organization. Instead, they might simply be wasting time by trying to figure something out that they could get done if they asked for help. They aren't getting anywhere, and therefore their work at the end of the day is negligible.
The same can be said for people who are getting a ton of tasks "completed," but they are not completed well. The amount of work they are completing is also negligible.
The work equation could be slightly rewritten to: Work = Quality Effort x Tasks Completed.
This basic format would be a great way to really measure how a person is performing in an organization. Even better, it would protect workers from feeling the need to put in countless hours simply because their peers are.
