’ve been working a new project for the past month. Printing my photos.
It’s something I’ve always been hesitant doing. When you print something, it loses that perfect sheen you get from a Macbook. Colors that exist in the printing world are just different than those in the digital world. Print is in CMKY, screen is RGB. Any time I printed photos that I liked, they came out poorly.
But in a new-ish apartment, I wanted to try again. And to do something cool.
First I had to select some. I knew I wanted different photos with several different colors – but wasn’t entirely sure how they would be situated.
After narrowing them all down, I sorted the different types by color. This one was brown – and sadly none of them made the cut.
Next up was wall design. I was moving pictures around a billion times, and started to come up with the idea for a “dark side of the moon” look.
The next, and by far the worst, step was print planning. I had to adjust pictures as best I could to CMKY, and test a few small images to see how they came out. While waiting for prints, I went ahead and taped different parts of the wall and ensured that everything would be properly spaced according to the design. This was important. By spacing the time between measuring and hanging I didn’t rush the hanging process. “Measure twice, [hang] once.”
The prints arrived and looked shockingly good. Hanging took only a few hours since I did the leg work ahead of time. And I was please with the end result. This super low resolution photo doesn’t do it the best justice – but shows the look I was striving for.
